Alocasia Black Velvet Pink Variegated: The Complete Collector's Guide
The Alocasia Black Velvet Pink Variegated is one of the most visually striking expressions of pink chimeric variegation in the jewel Alocasia world, a plant where the near-black, velvety foliage of Alocasia reginula (Black Velvet) serves as the backdrop for pink anthocyanin-driven sectors that read as intensely warm and luminous against the dark, light-absorbing base. Pink variegation on dark foliage creates a fundamentally different visual experience from pink variegation on green or medium-toned bases: the warmth of the pink sectors is amplified by the contrast with the dark surrounding tissue, and the matte, velvety texture of reginula's foliage ensures that the pink reads as a rich, saturated tone rather than the brighter, more reflective pink seen on glossier surfaces.
Alocasia reginula is endemic to the limestone forests of Sabah, Malaysian Borneo, specifically known from the Tabin Wildlife Reserve, where it grows on dry, deeply shaded limestone cliffs. The species was described from cultivated specimens and known commercially as 'Black Velvet' before its formal botanical description was published. It is a compact jewel species reaching 20-40cm, with the characteristic dark near-black velvety leaves, silver-white primary venation, and marginal vein that give it its exceptional visual character. The species name reginula means 'little queen' in Latin, apt for a plant that delivers extraordinary visual impact at jewel scale. It is related to but distinct from Alocasia reginula 'Ninja', which carries the double marginal vein characteristic (see our Ninja Albo guide for that cultivar's specific context).
Chimeric pink variegation on the Black Velvet arises from elevated anthocyanin production in specific cell lineages, tinting those sectors a warm pink-rose. Unlike albo sectors, which are completely devoid of chlorophyll, pink chimeric sectors retain full chlorophyll production alongside the elevated anthocyanin. The pink colour is an overlay on the dark tissue rather than a replacement of it, which means even heavily pink-variegated specimens retain meaningful photosynthetic capacity. This gives the Black Velvet Pink somewhat better metabolic resilience than an albo form of the same species.
On the near-black base of Alocasia reginula, pink sectors create a visual effect that is exceptional in intensity, the warm-dark contrast between pink and near-black is among the highest-contrast colour relationships in the variegated Alocasia world. The silver-white venation continues through pink-variegated areas, providing structural clarity within the warm composition. The compact scale means this high-intensity visual effect is delivered at desk or shelf scale, a jewel specimen that commands attention at close range.
Care Requirements
Bright indirect light year-round with LED grow lighting from October through March. Temperature 20-27°C, humidity 60-80% maintained with a dedicated humidifier. Fluval Stratum substrate, thorough watering when the top 2-3cm is dry, never standing water. Feed with our plant feed range at the appropriate strength for the variegation type during the growing season. A heat mat beneath the pot supports root zone health through UK winters. Our complete variegation guide covers all expression types in full detail.
