The Alocasia Black Stem Albo combines two visually compelling elements, the dramatic black stem characteristic of the Alocasia macrorrhizos 'Black Stem' cultivar and chimeric white albo variegation on the blade, into a collector specimen where dark architectural structure and high-contrast colour expression work together at impressive scale. The 'Black Stem' selection of Alocasia macrorrhizos is selected specifically for its dramatically darkened petioles and stem, near-black rather than the standard green-grey of typical macrorrhizos, combined with the species' characteristic large, upward-pointing broadly ovate leaves. The resulting plant has a visual drama that the standard green-stemmed macrorrhizos lacks, with the dark stems creating a strong structural element that frames the foliage.

Alocasia macrorrhizos, the Giant Taro, is one of the most broadly distributed and historically significant Alocasia species in the world, native to the rainforests of Maritime South-East Asia, New Guinea, and the Torres Strait, and domesticated by Austronesian peoples in the Philippines thousands of years ago as a primary Pacific crop plant. Its enormous distribution and long history of human cultivation give it a cultural context that few ornamental plants possess. The 'Black Stem' cultivar takes this ancient species into the collector world through its darkened stem characteristic, and the albo form takes it further still through the addition of chimeric white variegation.

Albo variegation on the large, broad leaves of the Black Stem macrorrhizos operates at impressive scale, this is not jewel-scale albo expression on a 20cm leaf, but potentially bold white sectors on leaves that can reach 50-80cm in good conditions. The dark black stems and white albo sectors create a stark, high-contrast composition that has genuine presence at room scale. The non-photosynthetic albo sectors require consistent bright indirect light; the scale of the leaves means that light provision is even more important here than for compact species. LED supplementation from October to March is essential. Monitor the large leaf surfaces for spider mites using our pest control range.

Care Requirements

Bright indirect light year-round with LED grow lighting from October through March. Temperature 20-27°C, humidity 60-80% maintained with a dedicated humidifier. Fluval Stratum substrate, thorough watering when the top 2-3cm is dry, never standing water. Feed with our plant feed range at the appropriate strength for the variegation type during the growing season. A heat mat beneath the pot supports root zone health through UK winters. Our complete variegation guide covers all expression types in full detail.
