Alocasia scabriuscula Albo Variegated
Looking for Alocasia scabriuscula Albo Variegated? This is a rare, true-white variegated form of a striking and still uncommon species, and one for the collector who wants something with real presence rather than another rounded jewel Alocasia.
Alocasia scabriuscula is a robust species with long, thickly leathery, almost succulent blades held on relatively short petioles, those petioles often marked with fine purple-brown dotting and lines that are characteristic of the species. The leaf runs ovato-sagittate, dark to light grey-green above, and carries itself with a boldness out of proportion to the size of the plant. It is architectural in a way the popular compact species are not.
The albo form breaks that deep grey-green with clean white. Because this is true albo variegation, the white sectors carry no chlorophyll at all, reading bright and hard against the leathery blade. Some leaves take white cleanly down half the blade, others come through as speckled and marbled white-on-green, and a few emerge almost entirely white. The variegation is chimeric and sectoral, so no two leaves and no two plants express the same way, and it cannot be guaranteed true-to-type through tissue culture. That unpredictability is exactly what makes an albo of this species worth holding.
In cultivation it rewards bright, indirect light, which supports both vigour and stable variegation. The white tissue carries no chlorophyll, so a little extra light helps the plant overall without scorching the pale sectors. Keep humidity high and water once the top of the substrate begins to dry.
