Alocasia Bisma Platinum Albo Variegated: The Complete Collector's Guide
Share
The Alocasia Bisma Platinum Albo Variegated is a collector specimen of genuine rarity — chimeric white variegation on a Bornean limestone endemic that is among the least commonly encountered jewel Alocasia in mainstream cultivation. *Alocasia* 'Bisma' is identified with a limestone cliff-adapted species from Sabah, Malaysian Borneo — specifically associated with the Madai Caves locality at approximately 400m elevation, growing on limestone outcrops in lowland forest. The 'Platinum' designation in the cultivar name refers to the characteristic silver-grey to platinum colouration of the leaf surface, which gives this species a distinctly cool, metallic quality similar in register to *Alocasia nebula* but with its own specific character.
The limestone origin of the Bisma has the same practical implications as for other limestone-adapted Alocasia: a substrate that benefits from a small addition of coarse dolomite to buffer pH slightly upward from the purely acidic range, and growing conditions that prioritise excellent drainage — the limestone cliff and cave-edge habitat of this species ensures that its root system never experiences waterlogging in the wild, and cultivation must replicate this drainage characteristic.
Chimeric albo variegation on the silver-grey to platinum surface of the Bisma creates a visual composition that is cool throughout — cool platinum base, cool silver-white albo sectors, all in a cool-toned register with only the substrate-derived warmth of the deeper venation providing contrast. This entirely cool composition is distinctive among albo Alocasia and gives the Bisma Platinum Albo a character closer to silver jewellery than to the warm, dramatic contrasts of dark-based albo forms. The non-photosynthetic albo sectors require consistent bright indirect light and conservative care.
Bright indirect light year-round with LED grow lighting from October through March. Temperature 20-27°C, humidity 60-80% maintained with a dedicated humidifier. Fluval Stratum substrate, thorough watering when the top 2-3cm is dry, never standing water. Feed with our plant feed range at the appropriate strength for the variegation type during the growing season. A heat mat beneath the pot supports root zone health through UK winters. Our complete variegation guide covers all expression types in full detail.
