The Alocasia Azlanii Albo Pink Variegated is a collector specimen of exceptional rarity and visual complexity, a very recently described Bornean species, already remarkable in its standard form for iridescent metallic foliage and deep magenta venation, now carrying two additional colour expressions simultaneously: chimeric albo sectors producing white or cream tissue, and chimeric pink sectors expressing anthocyanin-driven pink colouration. The result is a leaf where white, pink, and the species' characteristic metallic green-copper-violet base colouration coexist within a single blade, the deep magenta primary veins providing a structural grid that ties the composition together. This is variegated Alocasia at its most compositionally complex, on a species whose standard form is already one of the most visually extraordinary in the genus.

Species Background: Alocasia azlanii

*Alocasia azlanii* is one of the most recently described jewel Alocasia species in current collector cultivation, formally named by K.M. Wong and P.C. Boyce in 2016, just under a decade ago. It is endemic to Brunei on the island of Borneo, growing in the lowland alluvial forests of the Tutong District near the Benutan Dam catchment forest. The species is classified within the Cuprea Group of Alocasia, the same botanical grouping that includes the celebrated *Alocasia cuprea*, and shares with its Cuprea Group relatives a compact jewel habit, thick leathery foliage, and a distinctive iridescent or metallic quality to the leaf surface that is unlike anything produced by the larger-leaved Alocasia species. The species name honours Azlan Pandai of the Brunei National Herbarium, whose fieldwork in tracking down aroids in the Bornean forest directly led to the collection that allowed the species to be formally described. This is a plant with a discoverer's name attached, a reminder that the specimens now valued by collectors globally were not long ago entirely unknown to science outside their native forest habitat. In its standard form, *Alocasia azlanii* is immediately distinctive. Leaves are ovate-elliptic, up to 20cm long and 11cm wide, with a thick leathery surface carrying a dramatic iridescent metallic sheen, shifting between green, copper, and violet tones as viewing angle and light direction change. The venation is one of the species' most celebrated characteristics: deep magenta to purple primary veins and intramarginal veins that are prominent, bold, and entirely unlike the silver-white venation of most other jewel Alocasia. The leaf undersides are red to crimson, adding a fourth colour dimension to the composition. The species grows to 10-28cm in cultivation, genuinely compact, making it suitable for shelving, terrariums, and close-viewing displays where its extraordinary surface character can be appreciated at the scale it demands.

The Albo Pink Variegation: A Dual Expression

The Azlanii Albo Pink carries two independent variegation mechanisms simultaneously. The albo sectors, white or cream tissue, arise from a chimeric plastid genome mutation causing chlorophyll absence in specific cell lineages. The pink sectors arise from chimeric anthocyanin expression, where certain cell lineages produce elevated anthocyanin pigments creating pink colouration. Both are chimeric: neither is stable, neither is predictable between leaves, and neither can be reliably transmitted through seed. Both require vegetative propagation to maintain.

On *Alocasia azlanii*, these two variegation types interact with the species' already multi-coloured base in ways that no other Alocasia can replicate. The white albo sectors provide high contrast against the dark metallic green base. The pink sectors create a warm tone that resonates with and amplifies the deep magenta venation, the pink variegation and the pink-magenta veins read as related elements rather than disconnected ones, creating a visual coherence within what could otherwise be a confusingly busy composition. The iridescent quality of azlanii's foliage, the way the metallic surface shifts between green, copper, and violet, continues to operate beneath and within the variegated sectors, so that even white sectors on this species carry a different visual quality from white sectors on a matte-surfaced Alocasia.

The non-photosynthetic albo sectors mean this form has reduced metabolic efficiency compared to the standard species or the pink-only variant. Consistent bright indirect light is therefore especially critical, the green and partially photosynthetic sectors must work efficiently to sustain the plant's growth and maintain healthy variegation. Light, Care and Growing in the UK

Bright indirect light year-round is essential, with LED grow lighting strongly recommended from October through March, 10,000-15,000 lux for 12-14 hours per day. *Alocasia azlanii*'s Bornean lowland forest origins establish the environmental template: consistently warm (20-27Β°C, 15Β°C minimum), consistently humid (60-80%), with well-drained substrate and no cold draughts.

The compact scale of *Alocasia azlanii*, 10-28cm, means it is well suited to terrarium cultivation where both temperature and humidity can be tightly controlled, and where the iridescent surface character and variegation can be viewed at close range. Outside terrariums, positioning on a shelf at eye level where light catches the metallic surface allows the full visual complexity of the plant to be appreciated.
