The Alocasia Wentii Pink Splash is a collector specimen carrying chimeric pink variegation on the plant sold commercially as *Alocasia wentii* — a widely grown, large-leaved aroid that brings an interesting taxonomic wrinkle to any collector familiar with the genus. The true *Alocasia wentii*, described in 1916-1917 from specimens growing as an epiphyte at 1,500m on Mount Hellwig in Papua New Guinea, is a small, dark-leaved mountain species that is practically absent from cultivation globally. The plant sold in commerce as 'Alocasia wentii' — the hardy elephant's ear with its large glossy leaves and distinctive purple undersides — is, according to Alocasia expert Alistair Hay and botanical research, actually *Alocasia* 'Uhinkii': a hybrid between *Alocasia cuprea* and *Alocasia odora* that was created in the French nursery of the Chantrier brothers at Mortefontaine before 1897, and subsequently confused with the true wentii through a sequence of misidentifications.

This taxonomic context matters to serious collectors because it reveals the plant's actual lineage: *Alocasia cuprea* from Borneo (the metallic jewel species) crossed with *Alocasia odora* from the broad distribution across East and South-East Asia (the giant upright elephant ear). The resulting 'Uhinkii' hybrid inherits the cuprea's characteristic purple undersides and some of its metallic quality, combined with the odora's vigorous growth habit and larger scale. This lineage is directly visible in the plant's appearance: the large, broadly arrow-shaped leaves with their glossy green upper surface and distinctive deep purple-bronze undersides are a hybrid expression of exactly these two parents.

The Pink Splash variegation on this cultivar presents chimeric pink sectors — elevated anthocyanin expression in specific cell lineages — as irregular splash or speckle patterns distributed across the blade. The pink sectors' warm tone interacts with the plant's characteristic purple undersides to create a warm-toned colour composition that is particularly coherent on this specific hybrid, given the purple background already present. On leaves where the blade edge turns to reveal the underside, the pink splash and purple reverse are visible simultaneously, reinforcing the warm character across the full leaf.
