The Alocasia Simpo Aurea carries golden-yellow aurea variegation on Alocasia 'Simpo', a hybrid bred in Malaysia by Wawan Santoso and named after Bukit Simpo, the Simpo Hills, where one of the nurseries he worked at is located. Its suspected parentage is Alocasia sinuata × Alocasia 'Lukiwan', itself a Santoso cross of Alocasia alba × Alocasia sinuata, although Santoso does not remember the exact cross. From that sinuata-heavy background 'Simpo' takes a highly bullate, glabrous leaf, raised and quilted between the veins, with an open basal sinus on mature leaves. Aurea variegation on this base adds golden-yellow sectors that sit across the raised quilting, so the colour reads with depth as well as contrast.
We have written a detailed guide to the Simpo Albo previously, which covers the hybrid's background and standard care in full: see our Alocasia Simpo Albo guide. The aurea form differs in its variegation mechanism, carotenoid-based golden expression rather than chimeric white, and in the resulting visual character and growing behaviour.
Aurea sectors on the Simpo retain photosynthetic capacity, making this form more vigorous than the albo. The golden-yellow reads against the deep green blade, and the quilted surface catches the light differently on gold and green, which gives the variegation a quiet, three-dimensional quality on this hybrid rather than a flat contrast. Light is the critical variable for vivid golden expression, consistent bright indirect light year-round with LED supplementation from October to March. Our aurea variegation guide covers the carotenoid mechanism in detail.
Care Requirements
Bright indirect light year-round with LED grow lighting from October through March. Temperature 20-27°C, humidity 60-80% maintained with a dedicated humidifier. Fluval Stratum substrate, thorough watering when the top 2-3cm is dry, never standing water. Feed with our plant feed range at the appropriate strength for the variegation type during the growing season. A heat mat beneath the pot supports root zone health through UK winters. Our complete variegation guide covers all expression types in full detail.
We release Simpo Aurea through our drop model. Join the collector list and view our Alocasia Simpo Aurea listing. Our aurea variegated collection includes related specimens.
