The Alocasia Amazonica Aurea presents golden carotenoid-based variegation on Alocasia × amazonica, the iconic hybrid whose dark glossy leaves and bold white venation have made it the most recognised Alocasia in the world. Aurea variegation on the amazonica's near-black blade creates golden-yellow sectors that appear dramatically luminous against the dark background, the warm-dark contrast delivering one of the highest-impact colour combinations in the variegated Alocasia world. On a species already defined by its bold leaf architecture and high-contrast venation, the additional dimension of golden sectors distributed across the deeply undulate blade creates a specimen of exceptional visual complexity.
Hybrid Background: Alocasia × amazonica
The hybrid carrying this golden variegation has an origin that surprises most people who meet it. Alocasia × amazonica has nothing to do with the Amazon: it was made in Miami, Florida, in the 1950s by Salvadore Mauro, a postman and keen plantsman who ran a nursery called Amazon Nursery. He crossed Alocasia sanderiana, the critically endangered Philippine kris plant, with Alocasia longiloba 'Watsoniana', the historic Bornean cultivar, and named the result after the nursery. The dramatic, tropical-looking foliage has kept the confusion alive ever since, but the genetics are entirely South-East Asian, one parent from the Philippines and one from Borneo.
Commercially it has been one of the most successful Alocasia cultivars ever raised, and its progeny make up much of what is sold as the African Mask group. The most familiar of them is Alocasia 'Polly', probably the biggest-selling Alocasia anywhere, a compact polyploid mutation of the hybrid found by William Rotolante at Silver Krome Gardens in Florida in the early 2000s. The name is a contraction of "polyploid", and the chromosome doubling behind it gave the plant a more compact habit, thicker leaves and sharper venation contrast than the original. 'Balloon Heart', 'Venom' and 'Purpley' come from the same lineage.
The blade in its standard form is arrow-shaped and dark glossy green to near-black, its primary veins boldly white to yellowish, its margins deeply undulate after the sanderiana parent's kris-plant edge. That near-black ground is precisely why golden sectors carry so far on this hybrid. The longiloba parent adds scale, vigour and part of the extended venation pattern that separates the hybrid from sanderiana alone. One footnote for collectors: since the end of 2009 'Amazonica' has not been an accepted botanical name, the hybrid being treated as a synonym of Alocasia × mortfontanensis, though "Amazonica" remains the name almost everyone in the trade still uses.
Aurea Variegation on Amazonica
Golden-yellow carotenoid sectors on the near-black glossy blade of the amazonica/Polly lineage read as genuinely luminous, the warm yellow appearing to glow against the deep dark background with an intensity that can barely be approached on lighter-based species. The deeply undulate margins of the blade, derived from the sanderiana parent's kris-like edges, follow the aurea sectors along the leaf boundary, creating a scalloped golden edge on heavily variegated leaves that is one of the more striking visual effects in the aurea Alocasia world.
The bold white primary venation of the amazonica continues through both aurea and dark tissue, providing structural clarity across the composition. The interaction between white venation, golden aurea sectors, and deep near-black base creates a three-element composition of considerable richness. Aurea sectors retain photosynthetic capacity, giving this form relatively good vigour. Consistent bright indirect light with LED supplementation from October to March is essential, reduced light causes the golden sectors to become progressively greener and less vivid against the dark base. Our aurea variegation guide covers the mechanism in full.
Temperature 20-27°C, humidity 60-80%, Fluval Stratum substrate. Water when top 2-3cm is dry. Feed at half strength from our plant feed range during the growing season. Heat mat through UK winters.
