What collectors say
Care
Light. Bright, indirect light. Variegated tissue carries less chlorophyll and scorches more easily than green, so filter strong sun.
Water and humidity. Keep the substrate evenly moist, never wet. Aim for 60% humidity or higher.
Feeding. A balanced feed programme through spring and summer; ease off in winter.
Dormancy. An Alocasia that drops its leaves in the cold is usually resting, not dead. Keep it warm and barely moist and it will push again.
Delivery and arrival
Plants are dispatched Monday to Thursday only, so they never sit in a depot over a weekend. Every order is sent with a heat pack and packed plastic-free.
Free UK delivery on orders over £75. Unpack on arrival and give your plant a few days of steady conditions to acclimatise.
Every plant is covered by our 7-day live arrival guarantee. If there's a problem, email sales@thealocasiacompany.co.uk within 7 days of delivery with your order number and clear photos. Please don't repot in those first 7 days, as repotting voids the guarantee.
Pet safety
Like all aroids, this plant contains insoluble calcium oxalate crystals and is toxic if eaten. Keep it out of reach of cats, dogs and children.
About this cultivar
YUCATAN PRINCESS AUREA VARIEGATED
Alocasia 'Yucatan Princess' Aurea Variegated
Looking for Alocasia 'Yucatan Princess' Aurea Variegated? This is the golden-variegated form of a cultivar grown for scale and gloss, and it sits alongside the pink form we already offer.
'Yucatan Princess' is built around large, deeply glossy blades in a strong deep green, carried upright on sturdy petioles. It is an architectural plant rather than a fussy one, and the size of the leaf is what makes any variegation on it worth having. Sectoring that would be a detail on a small blade becomes a feature across one of these.
The aurea layer adds golden to yellow sectoring over that deep green ground, thrown into relief by the glossy surface. It is chimeric, produced by a genetically distinct tissue layer, so it lands differently on every leaf and every plant, from broad sectoring to finer marbling. Expression shifts with light and maturity. Aurea generally holds better than albo, though it is still not guaranteed true to type through tissue culture.
This is the sectoral form. We also offer the 'Lava' expression, where the colour runs across the whole blade instead of dividing into sectors.
In cultivation it rewards bright, indirect light, which supports both vigour and the variegation, since the pale tissue carries reduced chlorophyll. Keep humidity above 60% and water once the top of the substrate begins to dry.
All plants are grown in Fluval Stratum, our preferred early-stage medium for corms and baby Alocasia, held in our 3D printed Corm Keeper stand. Once fully rooted and at juvenile size we repot into our own pon mix, blended from components in our Soil Ninja range.
- Variegation: aurea, golden to yellow sectoring, chimeric and variable leaf to leaf
- Leaf: large, deeply glossy blades in strong deep green
- Habit: architectural and upright, a specimen plant with age
- Light: bright and indirect, to support healthy variegation
- Humidity: high, thrives at 60% and above
- Propagation: from corm, crown division or offsets
- Rarity: the aurea form is far less often seen than the pink
