Alocasia lowii Aurea Variegated
Looking for Alocasia lowii Aurea Variegated? This is a warm-toned aurea form of a classic arrowhead-leaved Alocasia, and one with a genuinely interesting backstory for the collector who likes to know what they are growing.
Alocasia lowii belongs to what growers call the "longiloba/lowii complex," a group of closely related Alocasia that intercross so freely that even telling the species apart is a real challenge. Many of the plants circulating among collectors under these names are varieties and hybrids rather than clean species, which is part of what makes the group so interesting to follow. This form shows the classic lowii character: a large, elongated, lobed blade with an open sinus between the two posterior lobes, held boldly on an upright petiole, with pale veining tracing the surface.
The aurea layer here reads warm. Rather than a hard gold, the variegation comes through in peach and soft butter tones, marbled through the green so that some leaves carry colour cleanly down one half while others break into finer speckling across a paler ground. Because the aurea variegation is chimeric, it lands differently on every leaf and every plant, and it cannot be guaranteed true-to-type through tissue culture. The peach warmth against the pale grey-green veining is what sets this one apart from the more common yellow aureas.
In cultivation it rewards bright, indirect light, which supports both vigour and the variegation, since the pale tissue carries reduced chlorophyll. Keep humidity high and water once the top of the substrate begins to dry.
