Join the drop listAlocasia 'Nairobi Nights' is a named hybrid developed by the Oglesby nursery, the same American breeding operation responsible for the 'Safari Series' that gave the world the Pink Dragon in its original Aurora form. 'Nairobi Nights' is characterised by dark green hastate foliage with creamy-white primary venation and distinctive pink-banded stems, the pink petiole characteristic appearing here in a banded rather than solid form, creating a different visual rhythm from the continuous pink of the Pink Dragon. The pink albo variant of this hybrid carries both chimeric pink sectors on the blade and the cultivar's characteristic pink stem banding, creating a plant where warm pink appears simultaneously at two scales: the bold stem markings visible from distance and the more delicate pink variegation sectors on the blade requiring closer observation.
The Oglesby provenance is significant context. Oglesby Plantations in Florida has been responsible for several of the most commercially successful collector Alocasia hybrids of the past two decades, working specifically with species that combine visual drama with manageable cultivation requirements. 'Nairobi Nights' reflects this approach: it is a compact plant at approximately 60cm, easy enough to grow for collectors of moderate experience, and visually distinctive enough to justify serious collector interest. The albo pink variant takes the hybrid's inherent colour complexity, the dark foliage, white venation, and pink stems, and adds a third pink element in the chimeric blade variegation, creating a specimen where the colour theme is elaborated through multiple mechanisms simultaneously.
The albo sectors are non-photosynthetic; the pink chimeric sectors retain chlorophyll. Consistent bright indirect light is essential.
Care Requirements
Bright indirect light year-round with LED grow lighting from October through March. Temperature 20-27°C, humidity 60-80% maintained with a dedicated humidifier. Fluval Stratum substrate, thorough watering when the top 2-3cm is dry, never standing water. Feed with our plant feed range at the appropriate strength for the variegation type during the growing season. A heat mat beneath the pot supports root zone health through UK winters. Our complete variegation guide covers all expression types in full detail.
