The Alocasia Golden Bone Variegated takes the already visually striking standard Golden Bone hybrid and adds a further layer of colour complexity, variegated sectors appearing on the deep green blade alongside the cultivar's characteristic lime-green venation. Where the standard Golden Bone operates with two colour elements (lime-green veins and deep green blade), the Variegated form introduces a third, creating a composition of three distinct colour notes on a single leaf that is unusually rich even within the variegated Alocasia world.

Hybrid Background: Alocasia Golden Bone

Before any variegated sector appears, the Golden Bone is already a cross of two well separated lineages: Alocasia micholitziana, the Green Velvet Alocasia, a Philippine species known for its velvety dark green foliage and cream-white midrib, and Alocasia cuprea, the Bornean metallic jewel species with its characteristic coppery-bronze surface and deep purple undersides. The hybrid is believed to combine the two, is of Indonesian origin, and was introduced to the collector market in 2006 by Indonesian grower Astri Yanto.

Its name comes from the venation, and the venation is what the variegation has to share a leaf with. Bright lime-green veins run against the deep, slightly glossy green blade like bones of golden-lime colour threaded through the darker foliage, a high-contrast architectural effect that is unique among the collector Alocasia currently in cultivation. The leaf is broad and shield-like with gently wavy margins, drawing on both parent species, and in good growing conditions the plant reaches 40-70cm, with broad leaves that display the lime venation clearly and dramatically. The cuprea parentage occasionally shows itself under certain light as a subtle bronze cast, giving depth to what would otherwise be a straightforward dark green background.

The standard Golden Bone's combination of Alocasia micholitziana and Alocasia cuprea parentage is covered in full in our complete Golden Bone guide. In summary: Indonesian origin, 2006, lime-green venation against deep green blade, shield-like leaf form, subtle metallic surface from the cuprea lineage, purple undersides.

Variegation on the Golden Bone

The variegation on the Golden Bone Variegated typically appears as lighter green, cream, or white sectors distributed across the blade alongside the existing lime-green venation. This creates a composition where the lime-green veins, already the plant's most visually dominant characteristic, now run through a blade where the background tissue itself is no longer uniform deep green. The contrast between the lime venation and the variegated lighter sectors is different from the contrast between the lime veins and the standard deep green blade: the relationship between vein colour and blade colour shifts, creating a composition of graduated light tones from deep green through lighter variegated areas to vivid lime veins.

The exact character of the variegation, whether cream-sectored albo-type, green-on-green, or other expression, varies between specimens and may be more or less stable depending on propagation history. The collector appeal lies in the three-colour composition: deep green, lighter variegated sectors, and lime-green venation interacting across the broad blade with the subtle metallic quality from the cuprea parentage adding further depth in good light.

Care Requirements

Bright indirect light year-round is essential for maintaining both the lime venation vividness and any variegated sector colour quality. LED supplementation from October to March. Temperature 20-27°C, humidity 60-80%. Fluval Stratum substrate, thorough watering when top 2-3cm is dry. Feed at half strength from our plant feed range every 2-3 weeks during the growing season. A heat mat beneath the pot supports root health in winter. Our complete variegation guide provides context for understanding the type of colour expression on this hybrid.
