Formed when volcanic rock expands under extreme heat and is ground down into chunky, porous fragments, coarse pumice provides drainage and aeration in a stable format that earns its place in the pot long-term.

The key advantage of pumice over perlite is density. Perlite is notoriously prone to floating to the surface of the pot with repeated watering, gradually disrupting the air chambers it was added to create. Coarse pumice is significantly denser, staying evenly distributed throughout the mix and maintaining consistent aeration around the root zone over time, a meaningful difference for rare Alocasia where root environment stability directly supports healthy, sustained growth.
