Activated Charcoal — Soil Ninja
Looking for Activated Charcoal? This finely graded purifying component is one of the few substrate additions that does its most important work invisibly — quietly filtering toxins, trapping harmful micro-organisms, and keeping the root environment of your rare Alocasia clean and stable between waterings. It's included in every single one of Soil Ninja's Premium Blends for good reason, and for collectors building their own custom mixes, it belongs in yours too.
Activated charcoal's primary function is purification. Its highly porous structure physically traps toxins, bad micro-organisms, and the impurities that accumulate in a pot over time through tap water, fertiliser residue, and general use. Left unchecked, these build-ups degrade the microfauna and microflora that make up the living biology of a healthy substrate — the beneficial bacteria and fungi that rare Alocasia root systems actively depend on. A small addition of activated charcoal to your mix acts as an ongoing filter, protecting that biology and helping maintain a stable, healthy root environment long after repotting.
Beyond purification, its porous structure also contributes to drainage and aeration, allowing air to flow freely through the mix while absorbing excess moisture as a buffer against overwatering. It's a particularly useful addition when growing in high-humidity conditions — such as within a grow tent or cabinet — where the risk of mould and stagnant air pockets in the substrate is elevated. Specifically included in Soil Ninja's Premium Alocasia Blend to filter impurities and support the plant's overall health and immune response.
