Description
Looking for Coarse Pumice? This volcanic aggregate is one of the most reliable aerating components available for custom aroid substrate mixes, and a significant upgrade on perlite for any collector serious about their growing setup. Formed when volcanic rock expands under extreme heat and is ground down into chunky, porous fragments, coarse pumice delivers exceptional drainage and aeration in a durable, stable format that earns its place in the pot long-term.
The key advantage of pumice over perlite is density. Perlite is notoriously prone to floating to the surface of the pot with repeated watering, gradually disrupting the air chambers it was added to create. Coarse pumice is significantly denser, staying evenly distributed throughout the mix and maintaining consistent aeration around the root zone over time — a meaningful difference for rare Alocasia where root environment stability directly supports healthy, sustained growth.
Its porous structure also allows water carrying dissolved minerals and nutrients to travel into drier areas of the pot without compromising airflow, and creates a high surface area for roots to wrap around comfortably as they develop. Coarse pumice is particularly well suited to larger, more established specimens with thicker, mature root systems, or as a structural aggregate in a custom chunky aroid mix where serious drainage is the priority.
Key Features:
Pair with zeolite and fine bark for a custom aroid mix, or use alongside the Premium Alocasia Blend to open up drainage for established plants in larger pots.
