Its appearance in both Blood Bone (as pollen parent) and Velvet Dragon (as berry carrier, or in some documented accounts as pollen parent) reflects the characteristics it contributes: the velvety foliage texture, the rich dark green colouration, the moderate humidity tolerance that makes hybrids involving it more practical for indoor collection, and the established popularity with collectors that gives its hybrid offspring an immediate audience.
The 'Green Velvet' parent also contributes to the family identity of the Philtjens hybrids. Alocasia tandurusa 'Jacklyn': From Sulawesian Rainforest to Collector's Hybrid Parent
Alocasia tandurusa is formally described by Prameswara and Hay (2023), making it one of the more recently scientifically documented Alocasia species in spite of having been in horticulture under the cultivar name 'Jacklyn' since well before formal description. The story of how it entered cultivation is itself significant for understanding the plant's collector status.
A local resident of Gorontalo in Northern Sulawesi named Enjie Jacklin purchased the first few individuals of the species and popularised it online under the name Alocasia 'Jacklin', which has since been misspelt as 'Jacklyn' in widespread commercial use. Indonesian growers, feeling that the original Jacklin's credit should be properly acknowledged while also working toward a more standardised nomenclature, have since promoted the botanical name Alocasia tandurusa. The specific epithet is an attempt at latinisation of the Indonesian name 'Tanduk Rusa', meaning deer antlers, referring to the deeply lobed, antler-like leaf blades.
Aroidpedia's entry on Alocasia tandurusa contains a note that is worth highlighting for any collector interested in the ethics as well as the botany of rare plant collecting: "Since the plant came to be known to horticultural collectors worldwide during the aroid-mania of the Covid pandemic, we understand that what is thought to be the main population has been severely depleted." This is an important reminder that demand from collector communities, however enthusiastic and well-intentioned, creates real-world pressures on wild plant populations that deserve serious consideration.
The plant itself is extraordinary. Native to the Bolaang Mongondow Regency of Sulawesi Utara in the Minahasa peninsula of Northern Sulawesi, it grows in constantly warm conditions (approximately 18β31Β°C) in humid forest understory between 500β1,000m altitude. Its deeply pinnatifid, antler-shaped blades display dark venation across a fine, slightly velvety surface, the pubescent leaf quality that partially echoes the micholitziana 'Green Velvet' parent in the Velvet Dragon cross. Thick, mottled petioles rise from a creeping rhizome. The deeply lobed blade structure is unlike virtually any other Alocasia in cultivation, giving plants a bold, sculptural appearance that photographs dramatically and impresses in person.
What Velvet Dragon Inherits
The combination of these two parents in Velvet Dragon creates a hybrid where the contributing characteristics of each parent are legible but have been reinterpreted through the lens of the cross. Growing Alocasia Velvet Dragon
Velvet Dragon's growing requirements sit between those of its two parents, warmer and more humidity-demanding than micholitziana 'Green Velvet' alone, but without the very specific requirements that pure tandurusa demands at higher difficulty levels.
Light
Bright indirect light is the fundamental requirement. Velvet Dragon's dark, velvety-influenced foliage benefits significantly from good light, the depth and richness of the dark green colouration is most apparent under bright conditions, and the surface quality most engaging under light that allows the texture to create subtle shadow play. Position within 1β1.5 metres of a well-lit window.
During UK autumn and winter, supplementation with LED grow lights is strongly recommended. The Jacklyn heritage makes Velvet Dragon somewhat more sensitive to low light than standard 'Green Velvet', its Sulawesian origins (consistently warm, tropical lowland-to-montane conditions) do not prepare it well for the dramatic light reduction of a UK winter. Maintaining 10β14 hours of supplemental light through the dark months keeps growth consistent and prevents the regression that low-light winter conditions can cause.
Avoid direct sun. The velvety, textured leaf surface of Velvet Dragon, like that of 'Green Velvet' itself, can heat up faster than glossy-leaved Alocasia under direct sun, and trichome-covered surfaces are more susceptible to bleaching and burning than smooth ones.
Temperature
Maintain 20β27Β°C during active growth. Velvet Dragon prefers slightly warmer conditions than some hybrid Alocasia, reflecting the tandurusa parent's lowland-to-lower-montane Sulawesian habitat where temperatures remain consistently warm. The critical threshold is 16Β°C, below this, growth pauses and the plant becomes vulnerable. UK rooms that cool significantly at night, particularly near single-glazed windows in winter, should be monitored carefully.
Humidity
Target 65β80% ambient humidity. The tandurusa 'Jacklyn' parent's forest understory origins, high humidity, consistent warmth, filtered light, inform Velvet Dragon's humidity requirements more than the micholitziana 'Green Velvet' parentage does. In the absence of adequate humidity, the leaf quality deteriorates: the rich dark colouration becomes less vivid, the surface texture appears less refined, and margin browning develops. A quality humidifier is strongly recommended rather than relying on passive humidity management.
Avoid misting directly onto the leaves. The velvety-influenced surface texture of Velvet Dragon can trap moisture droplets in ways that glossy-leaved Alocasia cannot, creating conditions that favour fungal issues. Ambient humidification is always preferable to foliar misting for any plant with textured leaf surfaces.
Substrate and Watering
Well-draining chunky aroid mix, the standard recommendation for collector Alocasia and entirely appropriate for Velvet Dragon. Fluval Stratum for corm propagation. The micholitziana 'Green Velvet' parentage means Velvet Dragon is somewhat more tolerant of consistent moisture than pure cuprea-influenced hybrids, it prefers the substrate to be consistently moist (though never waterlogged) rather than drying significantly between waterings.
Water when the top 2β3cm is dry, watering thoroughly. In summer under good light, this may mean watering every 4β6 days; in winter under reduced light and slower growth, reduce to once every 10β14 days or less. Feeding
Half-strength balanced fertiliser every second or third watering during active growth (broadly late spring through early autumn). Stop entirely through winter. The Philtjens hybrids, Blood Bone and Velvet Dragon, are both plants where conservative feeding at half-strength consistently outperforms aggressive full-strength applications. The hybrid genetics create sensitivity to excess nutrition that pure species plants may not share to the same degree.
