Alocasia 'Puber Princess' Lemon, lemon-toned variegation on compact foliage

The Alocasia Puber Princess Lemon brings vivid lemon-yellow aurea-type variegation to Alocasia puber, a large, swamp-adapted species native to West and Central Java, Southern Sumatra, and Peninsular Malaysia. Alocasia puber is a substantial species, stems approximately 10cm thick supporting blades that can reach 80cm × 70cm, on petioles up to 1.5m long, making it one of the more imposing Alocasia species in collector cultivation. The 'Princess Lemon' cultivar designation indicates a selected form with particularly vivid lemon-yellow colour expression, and the combination of large-scale foliage and striking lemon variegation creates a display specimen of considerable presence.

Alocasia puber's ecological background is distinctive among Alocasia: it thrives in open swampy areas and wet locations within open forests, from sea level to approximately 1,000m elevation. This swamp tolerance is unusual in the genus, most Alocasia are adapted to free-draining, well-aerated substrate, and has practical cultivation implications. The species is somewhat more tolerant of moisture than most collector Alocasia, though it still requires free drainage and should never be permanently waterlogged. The name puber refers to the somewhat hairy texture of the petioles, another distinctive characteristic.

The 'Princess Lemon' colour expression is a vivid, saturated lemon-yellow, warmer and more intense than standard golden aurea, with a brightness that reads clearly across the large blade surface. On a species whose leaves can reach substantial size, this lemon-yellow variegation operates at a display scale that smaller variegated Alocasia cannot approach. The large leaf surface means spider mites are a persistent management consideration, inspect the undersides of leaves regularly and use our pest control range promptly at first sign. Light is critical for maintaining the lemon colour quality: LED supplementation from October to March is essential.

Care Requirements
