Alocasia Nairobi Nights: The Complete Collector's Guide
Share
*Alocasia* 'Nairobi Nights' is a named hybrid from the Oglesby Plantations breeding programme — the American Alocasia breeding operation also responsible for the Safari Series that produced the Pink Dragon 'Aurora' and several other widely collected cultivars. 'Nairobi Nights' is characterised by dark green hastate foliage with creamy-white primary venation, pink stems with distinctive banding, and a compact, manageable growth habit reaching approximately 60cm in good conditions. The cultivar name invokes the dark, atmospheric quality of the foliage — deep, rich, and dramatic — alongside the pink-banded stems that give the plant a warm accent against its dark blade.
The Oglesby provenance provides important context for collectors. Oglesby Plantations has focused on producing Alocasia hybrids that combine clear visual distinction with manageable cultivation requirements — a philosophy that has produced some of the most commercially successful collector Alocasia of the past two decades. 'Nairobi Nights' reflects this approach: the dark foliage provides drama and collector interest; the pink-banded stems add the warm accent that has proven commercially compelling across the Oglesby range; and the compact, relatively uncomplicated growth habit makes it accessible to collectors at most experience levels.
The pink stem banding of 'Nairobi Nights' is a constitutive characteristic — stable and consistent across all petioles produced by the plant — rather than a variegation in the chimeric sense. The banding pattern creates a striped effect different from the continuous solid pink of the Pink Dragon or the spotting/mottling of some other pink-stemmed cultivars. This architectural detail is most visible at close range, and the plant is best appreciated where both the dark blade surface and the distinctive stem character can be seen together.
Care is straightforward: bright indirect light year-round with LED supplementation from October to March. Temperature 20-27°C, humidity 60-80%. Fluval Stratum substrate, thorough watering when top 2-3cm is dry. Balanced feed from our plant feed range at half strength during the growing season. Heat mat support through UK winters.
