Philodendron billietiae Aurea Variegated
Looking for Philodendron billietiae Aurea Variegated? This is a golden-variegated form of one of the most recognisable strap-leaved Philodendron, and a scarce one worth understanding before you buy.
Philodendron billietiae is already a distinctive plant without any variegation. The leaf is long, narrow and elegantly rippled along its margins, held on a petiole that flushes a striking orange to red, one of the few Philodendron where the stem is as much of a talking point as the foliage. It is architectural in a way few strap-leaved aroids manage.
The aurea form lays golden-yellow variegation over that already elegant leaf. Rather than clean white sectors, the colour comes through warm, gold and butter tones marbled and sectored through the deep green, so the effect is rich rather than stark. On a long strappy blade like this the variegation runs the length of the leaf, which reads very differently to how it sits on a broad round one. Because the variegation is chimeric, no two leaves express alike, and it cannot be guaranteed to come through the same way on every new leaf.
In cultivation billietiae is a climbing aroid and more forgiving than the jewel Alocasia many collectors know, but the golden tissue carries reduced chlorophyll, so bright, indirect light matters both to keep the plant vigorous and to hold the variegation. Give it a moss pole to climb, keep humidity up, and water once the top of the substrate begins to dry. We grow ours in our own pon mix, blended from components in our Soil Ninja range.
