The Alocasia Curly Bambino is a mutation cultivar of Alocasia × amazonica 'Bambino', the compact version of the iconic African Mask hybrid, selected for a distinctive crinkled, ruffled, or curled leaf expression that transforms the standard flat blade architecture of the Bambino into something with significantly more three-dimensional character. Where the standard Bambino produces smooth, flat, arrow-shaped leaves with bold white venation and deep green to near-black blades, the Curly Bambino's leaves are ruffled at the margins, crinkled across the surface, or both, creating a leaf that has the same essential colour and venation architecture as the standard form but delivers it through a corrugated, dynamic surface that is immediately visually distinct.
Alocasia × amazonica is one of the most widely cultivated decorative Alocasia in the world, the African Mask, produced from a cross between Alocasia longiloba 'Watsoniana' and Alocasia sanderiana at Salvadore Mauro's Amazon Nursery in Florida in the 1950s. 'Bambino' is a compact, smaller-leaved selection of this hybrid, well-suited to indoor cultivation where the full-sized amazonica's scale can be challenging to manage. The Bambino retains the amazonica's characteristic dark leaves with bold white primary venation and the deeply undulate margins derived from the sanderiana parent, but at a more manageable 30-50cm scale. Our existing guide to Alocasia Bambino covers the hybrid background in full.
The 'Curly' mutation in the Curly Bambino is a spontaneous somatic mutation affecting leaf development, the same category of mutation that produces the 'Crinkles' cultivar of Alocasia cucullata and similar forms in other Alocasia. The ruffled or crinkled expression does not affect the venation pattern or the leaf colouration, the bold white venation and dark blade characteristic of the amazonica/Bambino lineage remain fully intact. What changes is the surface architecture: the normally smooth blade becomes corrugated, the margins more deeply and irregularly ruffled, and the whole leaf has a more sculptural, three-dimensional quality that rewards close observation.
Care follows the standard Bambino approach: bright indirect light with LED supplementation from October to March. Temperature 20-27°C, humidity 60-80%. Fluval Stratum substrate, thorough watering when top 2-3cm is dry. Balanced feed from our plant feed range at half strength during the growing season. Heat mat support through UK winters.
