Alocasia scabriuscula Pink Variegated
Looking for Alocasia scabriuscula Pink Variegated? This is a pink-variegated form of a striking and still uncommon species, and one for the collector who wants presence and rarity in the same plant.
Alocasia scabriuscula is a robust species with long, thickly leathery, almost succulent blades held on relatively short petioles, those petioles often marked with fine purple-brown dotting and lines that are characteristic of the species. The leaf runs ovato-sagittate, dark to light grey-green above, and carries itself with a boldness out of proportion to the size of the plant. It is architectural in a way the popular compact jewel species are not.
The pink form overlays that deep grey-green with sectors and marbling of soft pink. It is worth being clear about what pink variegation is, because it behaves differently to white or gold. Pink is the least stable of the Alocasia variegation types: it expresses unevenly, varies considerably from leaf to leaf, and cannot be guaranteed to appear on every new leaf or to persist at the same intensity. The pink you see on one leaf is not a promise for the next. That unpredictability is exactly why a well-expressing pink of an uncommon species like this is so sought-after, and why it suits a collector who values the plant itself over a fixed outcome.
Because the pink and pale tissue carries reduced chlorophyll, bright indirect light matters, both to keep the plant strong and to support what pink it does produce, without scorching the softer sectors. Keep humidity high and water once the top of the substrate begins to dry.
