Substrate is one of the most consequential decisions you will make for your Alocasia collection, and one of the most frequently underestimated. The wrong growing medium holds too much moisture, suffocates roots, and creates the anaerobic conditions that lead directly to root rot. The right one drains freely, retains just enough moisture between waterings, and supports the root development that produces strong, healthy growth above the soil line. For rare and variegated specimens, where the stakes are higher, getting substrate right is not optional.

Every product in this collection has been selected on how it actually performs with Alocasia in real UK growing conditions. Fluval Stratum is our go-to for propagation and recovery, with a porous structure, neutral pH and support for beneficial microbial activity that make it one of the most reliable substrates available for tropical aroids. Alongside it you will find the components of our own pon mix, blended from the Soil Ninja range, and the supporting products we use to give plants the best possible root environment from the moment they are potted.

We use these substrates ourselves at our UK nursery. Nothing in this collection is listed because it is convenient to stock. Every product here is something we have used, tested and trust with our own plants.
