Care
Light. Bright, indirect light. Variegated tissue carries less chlorophyll and scorches more easily than green, so filter strong sun.
Water and humidity. Keep the substrate evenly moist, never wet. Aim for 60% humidity or higher.
Feeding. A balanced feed programme through spring and summer; ease off in winter.
Dormancy. An Alocasia that drops its leaves in the cold is usually resting, not dead. Keep it warm and barely moist and it will push again.

Alocasia watsoniana 'Lightning' Aurea Variegated
Looking for the Alocasia Watsoniana Aurea Variegated? This is the rare aurea-variegated form of Alocasia watsoniana, a Southeast Asian species treasured for its dark blue-green foliage and bold, silvery-white primary veining, here further elevated with golden-yellow aurea sectoring.
Distinctive Veining Meets Aurea Sectoring
Watsoniana is one of the most architecturally impressive Alocasia in cultivation. Its deep blue-green leaves carry pronounced silvery primary veins that fan dramatically from a central midrib, producing a near-sculptural effect. The aurea variegation overlays golden-yellow sectoring across this base, with sectors that range from soft butter through to deep gold. Aurea variegation is more stable than chimeric albo or pink expression but still varies leaf to leaf and intensifies with optimal light.
Care and Establishment
Watsoniana is a larger-growing species and appreciates bright, indirect light, humidity comfortably above 60%, and a chunky, well-draining aroid mix. Light is a major driver of aurea expression, and too dim a position will let the golden sectors fade. A gentle balanced feed programme during active growth supports leaf production and pigment stability.
All plants are grown in Fluval Stratum, our preferred early-stage medium for corms and baby Alocasia, held in our 3D printed Corm Keeper stand. Once fully rooted and at juvenile size we repot into our own pon mix, blended from components in our Soil Ninja range.
