Alocasia macrorrhizos "Stingray" Aurea Variegated
Looking for Alocasia macrorrhizos "Stingray" Aurea? The standard "Stingray" already has one of the most immediately recognisable silhouettes in the entire genus, and the aurea form takes that iconic shape and adds vivid golden-yellow variegation that lifts it firmly into serious collector territory.
The Stingray's appeal has always been its shape. Each leaf extends into a long, upward-curving tail that gives the plant its name, a silhouette that is wholly its own and unmistakable at a glance. The rippled leaf margins and boldly dappled stems add further textural interest that most Alocasia simply don't have. On the aurea form, yellow variegation is distributed across that already distinctive leaf surface in contrasting dappled patches against the deep green base. The combination of unusual form and strong colouration in a single plant is what makes this one collectors seek out. As with all aurea expressions, light is the key variable: in bright indirect light the yellow becomes vivid and luminous, while in lower light the contrast between the aurea sectors and the base green noticeably softens.
Alocasia macrorrhizos is a vigorous, large-growing species, and Stingray inherits that robust character. Consistent warmth, humidity above 60%, and good light will keep growth strong and the foliage performing at its best. Aurea variegation is generally stable between leaves, so the golden character should remain consistent as the plant matures and scales up. A gentle balanced feed through the growing season will support the substantial foliage this form is capable of producing.
