Care
Light. Bright, indirect light. Variegated tissue carries less chlorophyll and scorches more easily than green, so filter strong sun.
Water and humidity. Keep the substrate evenly moist, never wet. Aim for 60% humidity or higher.
Feeding. A balanced feed programme through spring and summer; ease off in winter.
Dormancy. An Alocasia that drops its leaves in the cold is usually resting, not dead. Keep it warm and barely moist and it will push again.

Alocasia venusta Aurea Variegated
Looking for Alocasia venusta Aurea Variegated? This is a golden-variegated form of a Bornean species that carries no variegation at all in the wild, which is precisely what makes it worth the attention. One plant only.
Alocasia venusta was described in 1998 from Niah National Park in Sarawak, and the name is a deliberate compliment: venusta derives from Venus, the Roman goddess of love, chosen for the plant's ornamental quality. It is a lithophyte, growing on rock rather than in soil, reaching around 45cm from a condensed rhizome up to 3cm thick, and carrying up to six leaves at a time.
The leaf is the point. Blades run 27 to 35cm long but only 9 to 12cm wide, so the plant reads narrow and upright rather than broad, and they are stiffly leathery in a shiny, very dark bluish green that deepens further along the main veins. Every leaf is completely peltate, meaning the petiole joins the underside of the blade rather than its edge, so the leaf is held out like a shield on a stalk. That trait matters taxonomically. Venusta is closely allied to Alocasia reversa but is the more robust of the two, and where reversa often mixes peltate and non-peltate leaves, venusta is consistently peltate throughout. The two are also geographically separate, reversa being known only from south-west Sarawak.
Here is the collector's angle. Alocasia reversa is the one with conspicuously patterned blades. Venusta is not naturally variegated at all, so an aurea form is a mutation rather than a species trait. It is chimeric, which means the golden to yellow sectoring lands differently on every leaf and every plant, and it cannot be guaranteed true to type through tissue culture. Aurea generally holds better than albo, though expression still shifts with light and maturity.
In cultivation, treat it as the rock-dwelling plant it is. A free-draining substrate, bright indirect light to support the pale tissue, humidity above 60%, and water once the top of the substrate begins to dry.
