Alocasia 'Green Unicorn': Rare Hybrid Houseplant for the Collector
The Alocasia 'Green Unicorn' is a rare houseplant that has held the attention of the plant collecting community since its 2021 release by hybridiser Lindsay Sisti. This hybrid Alocasia crosses Alocasia azlanii with Alocasia baginda 'Dragon Scale', drawing on the character of both parents.
The name is well chosen. In the houseplant hobby, "unicorn" describes the highly sought-after plants that many people want and few manage to find. This collector's plant lives up to that reputation, and its appearance holds its own in any serious plant collection.
Plant Details and Care Guide
Origins: This cultivated hybrid is not found growing wild, but its parent plants come from the tropical regions of Southeast Asia.
Size and growth: A compact Alocasia with a tuberous, bushy habit, reaching around 30cm tall and 50cm wide at maturity, so it makes its presence felt without dominating a space.
Watering: Water thoroughly once the soil is almost dry. It prefers little and often, keeping moisture consistent without waterlogging.
Lighting: Medium to bright indirect light, near a north or east-facing window. Direct sun will scorch the leaves, so keep the light filtered.
Humidity: Unlike some of the more demanding Alocasia, this one tolerates lower humidity, though it will grow better with higher humidity if you can provide it.
Temperature: Hold it between 18°C and 26°C, and avoid cold draughts or sudden swings.
This patented plant (USA patent, with EU plant breeders' rights applied for) reflects current standards in Alocasia breeding. Given steady care, the Alocasia Green Unicorn rewards the attention.
