Alocasia Maharani Albo Variegated

Some hybrids improve on both parents. This one did, and then it turned white.

A Cross of Two Icons

Maharani is the confirmed hybrid of Alocasia reginula (Black Velvet) and Alocasia melo, two of the most collected jewel Alocasia in the hobby. The cross keeps everything collectors want from each side: the compact, upright habit and deep red abaxials of Black Velvet, and the leathery, rough-textured leaf of melo, softened just enough to give the plant its own character.

What the Albo Changes

The standard Maharani is already a shelf plant of real presence. The albo form takes those textured silvery-green leaves and layers white variegation across them. Look closely and you'll see what separates it from its melo parent: distinctly lighter venation rather than uniform colouration, a softer leaf surface with less embossing, and those red undersides carried through from the reginula line. The white sectors sit against all of that.

A Word on These Four

These specimens are corm grown from variegated mother plants, not tissue culture. Albo variegation is chimeric, which means no two plants carry it the same way. Each of the four is showing its white, and each wears it differently. You are choosing an individual, not a copy.

How We Grow Them

All plants are grown in Fluval Stratum, our preferred early-stage medium for corms and baby Alocasia, held in our 3D printed Corm Keeper stand. Once fully rooted and at juvenile size we repot into our own pon mix, blended from components in our Soil Ninja range.
