PLANT SPOTLIGHT
Alocasia azlanii Orange Aurea Variegated
Four specimens. Sunday at 4pm.
You already know what azlanii does. Bornean jewel, compact habit, quilted leaves, pink-red veining tracing the major veins. The Orange Aurea form takes that base and lays bright orange and butter-yellow sectors across each leaf. Some leaves come through almost fully yellow with only a strip of green near the midrib. Others split half and half. Others scatter the yellow in patches across a green base. The veining runs through all of it, regardless of where the yellow falls.
The four in this drop sit at established juvenile, throwing aurea foliage on a balanced feed programme. They have been grown on through the spring in a chunky aroid mix, rooted on into the pots they will travel in. As with sectoral variegation in the genus, the expression shifts leaf to leaf, and an occasional softer leaf comes with the cultivar.
