PLANT SPOTLIGHT

Alocasia 'Yucatan Princess' Pink Variegated

The pink is in the veins.

Pink variegation has driven more collector speculation than any other variegation type in this hobby over the last few years. Pink Frydek, Pink Sinuata, Pink Dragon Scale — all of them work the same way, with pink sectors expressing alongside green sectors on the leaf surface.

The pink form of Alocasia 'Yucatan Princess' does something most other pink-variegated Alocasia don't. The pink isn't only sectoral — it runs through the veins themselves, threading soft pink across both the cream and the green parts of the leaf, with the same pink-burgundy tone carried down through the petioles.

The hybrid behind the leaf

'Yucatan Princess' is a hybrid known in its standard form for upright, sword-shaped leaves on burgundy petioles and a deep, almost lacquered green leaf surface that develops as the plant matures. Architectural rather than sprawling — a plant that grows up, not out.

The pink variegated form starts in a different place. At this juvenile stage, the leaves are heart-shaped, with broad cream and green sectoral variegation laid across the leaf surface. As the plant matures, the leaf form lengthens into the Yucatan Princess silhouette and the green deepens. The pink veining holds across that transition — which is part of why this form is worth growing out from this stage rather than buying as a mature specimen.

Why this form rarely surfaces

'Yucatan Princess' itself is reasonably established in the wider trade in its standard form. The pink variegated form is not. The pink-veined expression — with the colour running through the venation rather than just sitting in sectors — is rarer still. Stable expression of this kind doesn't come out of tissue culture reliably, and it has been propagated almost entirely within tight collector circles to date.

This drop is four plants. That's the supply.

What you're getting

Each plant is an established juvenile propagated from pink-veined variegated parent stock. Variegation is already expressing on current leaves, pink veining is pronounced, and the same pink-burgundy tone is carrying down through the petioles. Each plant ships in its pot, in pon, with free delivery included.

These are juveniles — not at full size yet. The variegation is locked in and the plant is putting its energy into growing up. Plan for a shelf or windowsill position for now, and height rather than width as it matures.
