PLANT SPOTLIGHT

Plant Spotlight: Alocasia Plumbea Nigra Pink Variegated

Some plants earn their place in a collection through colour, some through scarcity, and some through the simple fact that nobody who sees one forgets it. This week's drop manages all three.

The Story Behind Plumbea

Alocasia plumbea is a selection of Alocasia macrorrhizos, the Giant Taro, one of the most widely distributed and culturally significant Alocasia species on Earth. Native to the rainforests of Maritime South East Asia and New Guinea, macrorrhizos was domesticated thousands of years ago in the Philippines and carried across the Pacific, where it became a staple crop of island civilisations. Few ornamental plants can claim a human history that deep.

Where the standard species produces large upright leaves in fresh green, the Plumbea line turned the formula on its head. The name comes from plumbum, the Latin for lead, describing the dark, metallic foliage the selection is famous for. Plumbea Nigra is the deepest expression of that line, and as these plants mature, their leaves darken towards those graphite, near-black metallic tones. Which makes what happens on the juvenile foliage all the more remarkable.

When Pink Takes Over

Most pink variegated Alocasia show their colour in flashes and streaks. These do something else entirely. Expression across the four ranges from fine green splash mottling over soft blush grounds through to full half-moon sectors, where the leaf splits cleanly at the midrib into green on one side and solid dusky pink on the other. Deep rose veining threads through everything.

Pink sectoral variegation is among the least stable variegation types in Alocasia. It cannot be reliably reproduced through tissue culture true to type, it expresses differently on every new leaf, and reversion is always possible. Producing a plant worth selling means growing on, waiting, and keeping only those where the pink holds and expresses strongly. Most never make the cut. That instability is also the magic of it: no two leaves on these four look alike, let alone two plants. And as the foliage deepens towards Nigra's metallic tones with maturity, the contrast against that pink only sharpens.

What You're Getting

Four juvenile specimens, each selected for the strength of its pink expression. These arrived as imported plants grown in moss, were rooted into Fluval Stratum at the nursery, and have been transitioned into our own Soil Ninja based pon mix as they establish. Every plant is fully UK-acclimatised, and each ships in its pot with pon included, so there is nothing to do on arrival except find it the right spot.

If this plant sounds familiar, it should. A small batch was released recently and sold out, and the requests for it have not stopped since. These four are what remains.

Caring for Yours

Bright, indirect light will hold the strongest pink expression without scorching the delicate variegated sectors. Aim for humidity of 60% or higher, keep it in the mineral mix it arrives in, and run a gentle balanced feed programme through active growth. If you ever prune, leave variegated growth points intact to protect long-term expression.

The Drop

Four plants. £175 each, pots and pon included. Sunday, 4pm.

This is a collector list exclusive. The last batch went quickly, and we do not expect four to last long. If you're reading this, you're on the list, and the list gets there first.

Not 101 - Only 4!

A CLOSER LOOK

We do not mass-release rare plants.
