The Most Famous Velvet in the Hobby

Alocasia micholitziana is a compact velvet species native to the mountain forests of Luzon in the Philippines, and its most celebrated cultivar has been a fixture of the hobby for years: deep matte green velvet blades cut through with bright white venation. Most of the world knows it as 'Frydek'. Strictly speaking, that name is a misnomer — the correct cultivar name is Alocasia micholitziana 'Green Velvet', with 'Frydek' the trade name that stuck so hard it became the plant's identity. We use both, because a collector should know what's actually on the label.

However you name it, it's arguably the most recognised velvet Alocasia in the world. Which is what makes the form we're dropping this week such a double-take.

Round, Then Gold

"Dorayaki" is the round-leaf form of the classic, and the name is a lovely bit of collector shorthand: a dorayaki is the round Japanese red-bean pancake, and one look at that plump, rounded blade tells you exactly why the label stuck. Where the classic tapers to a point, Dorayaki stays soft and full, and the familiar velvet texture and bright venation carry straight over.

Then comes the aurea layer, and this is where the plant becomes genuinely scarce. Golden-yellow variegation runs through the deep green, from fine marbling and mottled patches to solid butter-gold sectors claiming entire wedges of the leaf. On velvet foliage, gold behaves differently to how it does on a glossy blade: the matte surface absorbs light and softens the colour, so the contrast sits deep within the leaf rather than flashing off the surface. It reads warm rather than stark, and it's a look almost nothing else in the hobby offers.

Aurea variegation is chimeric. It cannot be reproduced true-to-type through tissue culture, it lands differently on every leaf, and no two plants express alike. The four in this drop are four genuine one-offs.

Caring for Yours

Velvet Alocasia reward a little more attention than their leathery cousins. Bright, indirect light holds the variegation strong, humidity of 60% or higher keeps the blades happy, and water should go to the substrate rather than the foliage, as velvet leaves dislike being wetted directly. Keep it in the mineral mix it arrives in, run a gentle balanced feed programme through active growth, and leave variegated growth points intact if you ever prune.
