This is the golden-variegated form of a large-growing Alocasia that is still uncommon in UK collections, and a first for us.

Alocasia grandis is grown for scale and presence. Broad blades are carried boldly on upright petioles, and a well-established plant makes a considerable specimen rather than a shelf plant. That size is what makes a variegated form worth seeking out, since the sectoring has real area to express itself across.

The aurea layer is chimeric. Golden to yellow sectors are produced by a genetically distinct tissue layer, so they land differently on every leaf and every plant, ranging from clean sectoring across part of a blade to finer marbling on a paler ground. Expression also shifts with light levels and maturity. Aurea generally holds better than albo, but it is still not guaranteed true to type through tissue culture.

In cultivation it rewards bright, indirect light, which supports both vigour and the variegation, since the pale tissue carries reduced chlorophyll. Keep humidity above 60% and water once the top of the substrate begins to dry.

All plants are grown in Fluval Stratum, our preferred early-stage medium for corms and baby Alocasia, held in our 3D printed Corm Keeper stand.
